Come for a night of fun yoga with Cathy Mann to help your golf game on Tuesday March 22nd from 7:30pm to 9. If you can’t stay for the entire session, you may come to enjoy as much time as you have.

Cathy Mann runs her own Yoga studio and is extremely knowledgeable in her field. I really wanted to share her expertise with the members of my indoor golf group and many of my students from McGolf, so Cathy will be hosting my next meetup! I’m excited for anyone who joins this class whether you go for improvement in your golf game or overall well being! I can’t begin to tell you the importance of flexibility and how physical limitations can affect the golf swing. Having more flexibility and allowing your body to have more range of motion will without a doubt improve your game.

There are several yoga poses and stretches that are beneficial to golfers and help to build flexibility, strength, and stability in the body, while learning to focus the mind and the emotions. Yoga techniques have become quite popular among many golfers to improve both their physical and mental game. Dress for yoga!

Here’s a few exercises that help 2 time ReMax world long drive champion Jamie Sadlowski hit it further. Make sure you start with light weight and proper form is key. Watch the video a few times before you attempt these exercises and hopefully they will help you improve your overall distance. Who knows?…Maybe by the end of the summer you’ll even be able to reach a few par 5’s in 2!

Camilo Villegas Disqualified

Camilo Villegas gets disqualified from Kapalua for a rules violation. After the first round a Television viewer posted a tweet saying that he saw Camilo break a rule. I heard the man who posted that tweet on a radio show and he told his story. He was just watching the golf with his buddies and one of his friends commented that Camilo couldn’t move the divot as his ball was rolling back because the divot was now a loose impediment and his ball was in motion. That is a violation of Rule 23-1 that says, “When a ball is in motion, a loose impediment that might influence the movement of the ball must not be removed.” The penalty is two strokes. Unfortunately Camilo had completed his round and already signed his scorecard, which now was an incorrect scorecard. ”It makes me sick … that it wasn’t recognized prior to him signing his card,” said Slugger White, the PGA Tour’s vice president of rules. Villegas handled the situation very well and said ”If somebody called something in, I probably did something wrong.” He obviously didn’t know the rule and if he did know that was a rules violation, he never would have done that. The man who posted the tweet never thought it would make the news it did. He couldn’t believe no body else saw that and he was just making a comment on Twitter. What really stinks about the situation is that his ball wouldn’t have even hit the divot that he moved, but that doesn’t matter because it could have. If you’re going to play golf at a competitive level, then you better know the rules because the rules of golf can help you as much as they can hurt you! Always practice with a purpose and it will make it more fun! My purpose during this practice session was to work on my tempo and not think about my golf swing. I was just setting the club head in behind the ball aiming at my target and taking my stance. All I was trying to do was keep a nice rythym. I wasn’t standing frozen over the ball. I was just trying to stay loose, keep the club head moving with my waggle, and let it go!

1. To hit a flop, you have to maximize clubface loft at impact. For starters, use your most lofted wedge; mine is a 60-degree. Choke down an inch for control, and play the ball up, just inside your left heel. Don’t push your hands in front of the ball at address?you’ll deloft the clubface.

2. The swing should be long and lazy. Hinge your wrists as soon as you start back, creating a 90-degree angle between the club and your left arm. Keep your weight centered. Then swing down, and accelerate through the ball to a full finish.

3. One move that can kill the flop is an aggressive shift to your front foot on the downswing. This driving action angles the shaft forward, which reduces loft. Try this drill: Hit flop shots keeping your left heel just off the ground from start to finish. You won’t be able to drive forward, so you’ll keep more loft on the club.

A Sunday match that turned into drama!

I’ve known Andy Morse since I was a little kid and always looked up to him. I’ve played numerous rounds with Andy over the years and was always amazed by the way he struck the ball. I’ve played with a lot of great players and besides my dad, Andy is the best ball striker I’ve ever seen. To this day, I can’t believe he hasn’t made solid career on the PGA Tour.
Last Sunday I had the privlage to go head to head with Andy and finally gave him a match to remember! It was the Sunday of the Ryder Cup and on the second hole after his eagle on one, I told him that he was Europe and I was US.

Have you had your loft and lie checked on your irons?

You could be hitting perfect shots that don’t go straight because your lie angle is not right for your swing. The same goes for the loft on your clubs. It’s important to know that all your clubs are set to the correct loft. For example, industry standard loft on a pitching wedge is supposed to have 48 degrees. A 9 iron has 44 deg, 8 iron 40 deg and so on. With my exprience checking lofts on clubs, I’ve come to the conclusion that most sets are very inconsistent. It’s easy to fix and you should have yours checked!

Lie:
“Lie angle is the measurement between the hosel and the ground. This influences a shot’s direction. The correct lie angle helps you hit straight shots from a square hit. If the lie angle is too upright, the heel will dig too deeply and the ball will start left of your target. If the lie angle is too flat, the toe will dig in, causing the ball to start right of your target.

Loft:
 Although each club has a specific loft, it is affected by clubhead speed, swing path, and the angle of approach. More loft is better than too little because extra loft creates additional backspin, which, in turn, reduces sidespin. Too little loft may promote hanging back on the right side or a reverse weight shift in an effort to get the ball airborne.

A student of mine asked me, ” are you born with mental toughness, or can you develop it.” That’s a very good question, and I put a lot of thought into since.
I think that everyone has a powerful mind and mental toughness, and I think that everyone is born with it, but only few are born with the will and dedication to make it work.
